Early Treatment, also known as Phase 1 treatment, usually starts when a child still has some of their primary or “baby” teeth. This proactive approach allows us to identify and address orthodontic issues before they become more severe and potentially more difficult to correct later in life.
Early Treatment offers many advantages that go beyond aesthetics. By addressing certain orthodontic issues during a child’s growth period we can guide jaw development to accommodate the permanent teeth that haven’t yet erupted. This strategic approach often simplifies future treatment and may reduce the need for extractions or surgery later.

When does Treatment Start?
Early Treatment usually lasts between 9-18 months depending on the complexity of the case and the goals we want to achieve. After the initial phase we often recommend a resting period where we monitor your child’s growth and development while waiting for more permanent teeth to erupt. This observation phase is crucial in determining the need and extent of a potential second phase of treatment.
In addition to traditional braces we may use various specialized appliances during Early Treatment. Palatal expanders widen the upper jaw to correct crossbites and create space for crowded teeth. Space maintainers preserve the spaces left by prematurely lost baby teeth ensuring proper eruption paths for permanent teeth. Habit breaking appliances help children overcome persistent habits like thumb sucking that can affect dental development. Invisalign offers a discreet and comfortable way to straighten teeth using clear, removable aligners designed for everyday confidence.
